Enslaved people carried with them many valuable skills and useful knowledge that helped to build the societies in which they found themselves during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. In many cases, experts told participants at an event on “The Musical Journey of the African Diaspora” held on 14 April 2016 at New York Headquarters, the rhythms and musical traditions they brought with them from their homeland were essential to their survival and maintaining their identity.

In March 2016 on the International Day of Happiness, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, appointed Red from the Angry Birds as the Honorary Ambassador for Green.  The campaign, featuring the globally renowned mobile game character, encourages young people to take action on climate change and ensure a sustainable and happier future for all.

Training and recruitment of police women for UN peacekeeping

The United Nations Police Division is working with Member States since 2009 to increase the recruitment of police women in UN peacekeeping operations.

From 21 March to 2 April, 105 women from the Togolese National Police and Gendarmerie participated in an all-female UN Selection Assistance and Assessment Team (SAAT) training course in Lomé, Togo. The training focused on three components of the SAAT evaluation: language comprehension, driving and proficiency in firearms.
