Date:
Monday, 23 May 2022

The first International Migration Review Forum was held from 17-20 May 2022, under the auspices of the General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York. It was chaired by H.E. Abdulla Shahid, President of the UN General Assembly. The Forum served as the global platform where Member States were able to discuss and share progress on the implementation of all aspects of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The IMRF will take place every four years beginning in 2022 with each edition resulting in an intergovernmentally agreed Progress Declaration. During the four-day event there were four multi stakeholder round tables, a policy debate, and a general debate. The round tables offered the space for discussion of progress made in implementing the 23 objectives of the GCM and was interactive in nature with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The policy debate focused on the gaps and challenges in the implementation of the GCM, while the general debate provided Member States with the opportunity to report on their national migration initiatives and their reviews of progress in implementing the GCM. Member States in their national statements also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and financial support for countries to meet the commitments of the GCM. Guyana was represented at the Forum by Ambassador Michael Brotherson, Director of the Bilateral Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Ambassador Brotherson participated in the first roundtable of the Forum, which was held on 17 May 2022 and delivered a statement on behalf of Guyana on 19 May 2022.

Member States also had the opportunity to support the pledging initiative at the Forum in an effort to help build momentum for the review of the implementation of the GCM and assist all actors in contributing to its implementation in tangible ways. It is recommended that Guyana support the pledging initiative which can take the form of financial contributions, human resource contributions, policy-oriented commitments, and process-oriented commitments.

Guyana joined with other Member States in supporting the Progress Declaration that was adopted on 20 May 2022.
