The United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library plays a unique role in preserving the history of the Organization and the nations of the world. Since 1946, the Library has captured, preserved, documented, and managed over 15 million official documents, including reports, resolutions, speeches, and general thematic publications.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, the Library has unveiled an online exhibit of key documents that have shaped international relations and led to remarkable changes in the lives of the peoples of the world. These documents represent deliberations and commitments by the Member States on diverse topics ranging from peacekeeping to human rights, development, international law, humanitarian assistance, refugees, and other vulnerable populations.
The exhibit builds on a previous compilation of the 70th anniversary of the UN. In the last five years, the organization has addressed many global issues including, climate change, gender equality, migration, and many more. A remarkable accomplishment is the attainment of the Secretary-General, António Guterre’s commitment to achieving gender equality within the Organization’s senior management group - which is one of the exhibit’s highlights.
We believe that the research community will find the enhanced exploration of documents not only engaging but also enlightening on the positive role the United Nations continues to play in human discourse while appreciating the role of libraries in preserving this history.
