A Reminder to Delegates, Staff, and Visitors: No Smoking in UN Headquarters

Announcements type:
Building Access

The Department of Operational Support reminds all delegates, staff and visitors to UN Headquarters of the strict no smoking policy mandated by the General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/63/8 and stipulated in ST/SGB/2003/9 and detailed in ST/IC/2016/10.

Reports have been received from delegates and staff of recurring incidents of smoking in the 1B, 2B and 3B levels of the Garage. This raises health concerns from second-hand smoke inhalation and constitutes a fire hazard. The ban on smoking applies also to any derivative products such as eCigarettes

Everyone is reminded that smoking is not permitted anywhere inside UN Headquarters, including the stairwells, garage, driver lounge area, loading docks, the 3B drive or any other place in the buildings or on campus except the two designated exterior smoking areas shown below:

  • South Garden (signs showing the shortest route from the Secretariat lobby and the General Assembly and Conference Building main areas have been posted)
  • Promenade at the Northeast corner of the Conference Building (accessed via the doors located on the North Wall of the 1st basement level of the Conference Building).

Please help us keep the UNHQ premises a smoke-free environment.
