Friday, September 26, 2008 - 10:00

His Excellency Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley addressed the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly [UNGA] in New York.

In his address to the Assembly, His Excellency discussed Bhutan’s perspective on “…a host of serious challenges that are testing the relevance of the UN and the resolve of its member states to work together,” and highlighted the uniquely Bhutanese concept of Gross National Happiness as a “…holistic alternative paradigm for meaningful and sustainable development that places the wellbeing of the individual and community at the centre and gives cause for true happiness.”

This year, over 126 countries including Bhutan are being represented at the level of Heads of States and Head of Governments in the UNGA, and the UNGA is the largest gathering of world leaders at any given time.
