President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met with Vice President of the Asian Development Bank Xiaoyu Zhao at the Oqsaroy on April 18. The ADB’s high-ranking official is visiting our country to take part in the international conference “Modern Housing Construction as an Engine of Integrated Development and Transformation of Rural Areas, Improvement of Living Conditions of the Population”.

Islam Karimov noted that Uzbekistan considers the ADB as a key strategic partner in development issues.

For the years of cooperation between our country and the Bank, the latter has approved, as of 1 April 2013, the allocation of 48 loan packages for Uzbekistan totaling more than 13.5 billion US dollars, of which around 4.5 billion dollars accounts for the funding share of the Bank. The ADB occupies a leading position among international institutions in terms of the volume of acting credit portfolio. Thus, the Bank approved funding projects for 876 million US dollars in 2012 alone. And in the current year, it is expected to approve funding schemes for 837 million dollars.

Joint projects have covered transport infrastructure, agriculture, general and secondary special and vocational education, public utilities, small business and private entrepreneurship, housing construction as well as modernization of generating capacities.

The Asian Development Bank has been providing an extensive support in the execution of the elaborated integrated program for the development of rural areas. The institution has approved funding for the sum total of 500 million dollars. A remarkable result of the implementation of this scheme is the erection of more than 23 thousand modern comfortable homes in rural areas, in excess of 70 thousand jobs, approximately 700 social infrastructure facilities.

Xiaoyu Zhao pointed to the exceptionality of the program of housing construction in rural areas. This peerless model, according to him, is worthy of comprehensive study.

Not merely the volumes, but also the aspects of cooperation have been dynamically expanding; the spectrum of interaction has also been added in the recent years by the joint efforts in making use of broad opportunities offered by renewable sources of energy. Worthy of special attention is a hi-tech project – Central Asia’s first solar photoelectric station with a 100-megawatt capacity in Samarkand region, the elaboration of technical and economic feasibility study of which is currently being conducted by the Asian Development Bank.

During the meeting at the Oqsaroy, the two sides exchanged views on issues pertinent to the further development of mutual relations.

Xiaoyu Zhao expressed sincere gratitude to the head of our state for the hospitality and the organization of such an important conference.
