The Uzbekistan National Library named after Alisher Navoi hosted a press-conference to mark the results of cooperation between United Nations Development Program and the National Library of Uzbekistan. Scientists, readers, representatives of the government and international organization and the press attended the event.

Deputy director of the Uzbekistan National Library named after Alisher Navoi A.Eshmatov, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative J. Cilliers and others highlighted the special attention in our country to educating the young generation in the spirit of national and universal values, enhancing their reading culture.

The new centre of enlightenment (Ma’rifat markazi), built at the initiative of President Islam Karimov in 2011, is serving to improve the works in this direction. The National Library, a part of this centre, has all the facilities and amenities to serve the readers on par with world standards. It has more than 6,5 million books and the electronic library resources are adding up. The readers' hall for 700 people is equipped with modern technologies and wi-fi.

These conditions are only serving to increase the interest and attention of the public to the library.

The Uzbekistan National Library administration is implementing several projects with the state and international organizations to widen these possibilities, increase reading culture among the youth, introduce innovative technologies at the library. In particular, in cooperation with UNDP the National Library weeks and other events are being organized.

A memorandum of understanding on strengthening cooperation between the Uzbekistan National Library and UNDP was signed during the event.  The memorandum envisages organizing trainings and other events for the library staff on ICT tools, improving library services, supporting innovative ideas,  improving services to people with disabilities, increasing reading culture of the youth.
