Talofa and Welcome to the Permanent Mission of Tuvalu to the United Nations
H.E. Mr. Afelee Falema Pita, Permanent Representative presented
his credentials to His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General
of The United Nations
(December 2006)
About the Mission
The raising of Tuvalu's flag on 5 September 2000, in the midst of 188 Member States of the United Nations at the horizon of the New Millennium, is a milestone and new chapter in the history of Tuvalu when it proudly joined the International family as one of the smallest members of the United Nations. Subsequently, despite its limited resources and in view of the lack of diplomatic representation in many major capitals of the world, the Government of Tuvalu established its Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York with the initial objectives to:
- Build a stronger international identity for Tuvalu
- Build a stronger international presence for Tuvalu
- Strengthen friendships with UN members
- Forge new partnerships with UN members
- Support Tuvalu's regional and international agenda
- Support the regional and international agenda of the Pacific Forum
- Uphold the ideals and principles of the UN charter
At present the Mission's priority issues on its agenda are:
- Climate change and the unique vulnerbilities of Tuvalu to its adverse impacts
- Promotion of Tuvalu's interests and concerns
- Securing new and additional development assistance from potential donor countries at the UN through bilateral and regional programmes
- Developing new friends for Tuvalu through establishing diplomatic relations with the wider memberships of the UN.
The Permanent Mission of Tuvalu to the United Nations hopes that through this web site, it can play a crucial role to enhance its efforts in delivering and implementing its activities to achieve the above objectives. These activities will be highlighted and summarised in the following pages and your constructive comments and ideas on areas that need improvement will be welcomed.
