Theme: Solidarity for Peace, Justice and Friendship. ADDRESS BY THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF SURINAME TO THE UNITED NATIONS , AMBASSADOR HENRY MAC DONALD ON BEHALF OF THE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AT THE 15th MINISTERIAL CONF
10 October 2008 / 11:11

Mr. Chair,

Allow me to express my acknowledgement for the very able manner in which you have been conducting the affairs of our Movement since your country assumed its Chairmanship and to convey to you the cordial greetings of our Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is unfortunately unable to participate.

We reaffirm our full support in furthering the ideals and purposes of the Founding Principles of the Non-Aligned Movement as well as the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter towards sustainable development, maintaining international peace and security and the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Mr. Chairman,

The theme Solidarity for Peace, Justice and Friendship for our 15th ministerial conference is well chosen as each on its own is not a single goal, but together form a cluster of democratic values that either stand or fall together. It is well chosen in a time when we, within the Non-Aligned Movement and the United Nations, should do everything to defend and promote peace, justice and friendship for the people that we represent and on whose mandate we participate in this Conference.

International Law
Mr. Chair,

We fully endorse to the agreed views of continued relevance and validity of our Movement’s principled positions regarding international law. In this regard we are pleased to inform that Suriname has acceded to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as the 107th State Party.

Culture of Peace and Dialogue among Civilizations, Religions and Cultures

Suriname emphasizes the promotion of dialogue among civilizations and the culture of peace globally, in particular through the full implementation of the Global Agenda for Dialogue among Civilizations and its Program of Action and the Declaration and Program of Action on Culture of Peace.

We are a democracy, wherein various ethnic groups with different multi-cultural background and religious traditions have come a long way in coexisting and cooperating harmoniously and peacefully with each other. This is reflected in the political representation of our administration. It is within this atmosphere of democratic values, of high levels of religious and ethnic tolerance, that we are building a society that can prosper and engage with the region and with the world beyond.

Indigenous Peoples
We place great importance on the promotion and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms, including those of indigenous people. In this respect Suriname has supported the UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples by the General Assembly. With the adoption of this historic document we all can be proud of our activism which turned out in a process that the international community came to an agreement on the principles to govern the rights of indigenous people.

Role of Regional Organisations/ Regional and sub-regional political Issues
Mr. Chair,

As a contribution to the cultural, social, economic and political integration, Suriname joined in may this year other states in the region to establish the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), which is designed to strengthen political cooperation and dialogue between member states and to advance continental integration in concurrence with the need of this era of globalization.

Besides the strong and continuing commitments to our immediate region, we have not lost sight of the developments and opportunities in other parts of the world. We continue to promote and pursue, strengthen and intensify our channels of political dialogue between regional groups, in particular groupings of developing countries in reaffirming our shared commitment to the multilateral system. South-South Cooperation is a mechanism to be further utilized to strengthen and to increase the ability of the individual member states of the NAM, as we have the resources and potential among us to advance our own development.

Mr. Chair,

Our Movement continues to face significant development challenges. My delegation commits itself to cooperate with you for the best possible results and to engage in any constructive dialogue aimed at contributing to a better future for all, especially the most vulnerable ones.
Allow me to express our sincere thanks to the Islamic Republic of Iran for hosting this Ministerial Conference. And I would like to thank you, Mr.Chair and your competent team for the excellent arrangements made for the success of this Conference.
