Over the past year, staff have been working to create new informational products and posters, some of which will be of interest and lasting use to current and future scholars and human rights defenders. These products have been launched in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Historical Record of the Drafting Process

Web site: Historical Record of the UDHR Drafting Process The Dag Hammarksjöld Library, Department of Public Information, and the Library of the UN Office of Geneva are announcing the launch of a new web site providing online access to documentation related to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The web site presents documents in chronological order, arranged according to the various bodies that met to discuss, draft and re-draft the Declaration.

Brief biographical notes are included for the original members of the Drafting Committee formed by the UN Commission on Human Rights.

The online library is a unique, multimedia resource which provides the United Nations with the unprecedented capacity to provide high quality international law training and research materials to an unlimited number of recipients on a global level.

With an introduction by Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade, former President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the web site includes a list of related documents and an explanation of the procedural history involved in the drafting of the Declaration along with the historic video footage, UN Radio interviews and photographs.

Posters

Poster: Dignity and justice for all of us | Credit: Department of Public InformationThree posters were created by graphic designers in the Department of Public Information and were sent electronically to UN Information Centres, UN Country Offices and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights field presences for use on Human Rights Day and for human rights activities throughout the year.  The posters make use of images from Afghanistan, Sudan and Thailand from the UN Photo collection.

Other posters created by students as part of a competition conducted under the auspices of OHCHR and the patronage of the Italian Ministry of University and Research are available online.

Contestants were asked to give their own interpretation of the six cross-cutting themes associated with the  Stories on Human Rights project (Culture, Development, Dignity and Justice, Environment, Gender, and Participation), drawing their inspiration from the Universal Declaration's 60th anniversary slogan: “Dignity and Justice for all of us”.
