This year’s "Book Fair for Literacy", organized by UN Language Teachers of OHRM’s Language and Communications Programme will take place on Friday, 14 November in the Secretariat Lobby at Headquarters from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The annual book event to mark "World Teachers Day", officially designated 5 October by UNESCO, raises funds to support literacy causes. Staff members are invited to drop off donations of books at assigned tables in the lobby between 8:30 a.m. and noon.
Thanks to the contributions of staff, last year's "Book Fair for Literacy" took in nearly $2,200, which was donated to literacy projects of the "UN Staff 1% for Development Fund". The funds were used to roof a new Computer Center being developed in the Kitengesa Village Library in Uganda. Donations from a previous book fair were used to purchase solar panel for the library, helping it to stay open for longer hours and be more available to users.
The Kitengesa Library was built with a grant of just a few thousand dollars from the "UN 1% for Development Fund". With the books, newspapers, classes, women's groups, and events it offers, the library has transformed the life of people in the remote farming village of Kitengesa. It has also become a model for the creation of new village libraries.
