Ms. Migiro presided over the annual meeting of the Regional Coordinating Mechanism, along with Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena and the Regional Directors of UN Funds, Programmes, Offices and other UN-related agencies.

During the meeting, participants reinforced their commitment to support the efforts of countries in the region in addressing the potential impact of the international financial crisis, particularly with regard to reducing poverty and improving social investment.

They also expressed their agreement with the Heads of State gathered last week for the XVIII Ibero-American Summit regarding the need to adopt measures to protect employment and investment, ensure the availability of funds for productive activities, and promote social policies that benefit particularly the most vulnerable.
