Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Alain Le Roy, is in Sudan on a week-long familiarization tour. During his visit, he will meet with leaders of the Government of National Unity and the Government of Southern Sudan as well as other key parties.
He will also meet with members of United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) and the African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeeping missions.
The visit to UNMIS is his first to a peacekeeping mission since he was appointed as head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in August 2008.
Mr. Le Roy arrived in Khartoum on Monday morning and met with the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Sudan, Ashraf Qazi, prior to meeting UNMIS senior management in Khartoum.
During his stay, he will visit Kadugli, Abyei, Juba and El Obeid, as well as El Fasher, Nyala and El Geneina in Darfur.
His arrival coincided with an attack by a group of about 40 to 60 armed men on an UNAMID convoy, which killed one peacekeeper.
Secretary-General BAN Ki-moon on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack, stressing that all parties have a responsibility to respect the mandate and integrity of the joint African Union/United Nations peacekeeping operation in Darfur (press conference).
A statement issued from the Spokesperson’s office said “Both the Government of Sudan, as well as the concerned armed movements operating in the area, bear responsibility for the provision of security and for refraining from attacks against civilians as well as UN peacekeepers" (full statement).
The Secretary-General offered his condolences to the Government of Nigeria and to the friends and family of the deceased.
