DPI launches Chinese version of award-winning UNTV series 21st Century

Following on last year's successful launch of 21ème Siècle, United Nations Television (UNTV), in cooperation with China Business Network (CBN) of Shanghai this month proudly launched Ershiyi shiji, the Chinese version of the award-winning news magazine series 21st Century to an audience of 600 million in China. The partnership agreement was signed at an official ceremony on 19 April, with Mr. Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information signing for the United Nations and CBN New York correspondent Ms. Weier Ge representing the broadcaster.
"It is a great honour to work with the UN on the 21st Century project," said Miranda Shek, Executive Producer, International Business Development, CBNTV. "I believe it is a fabulous beginning for deeper and closer cooperation between CBN and the UN. 21st Century is a programme which promotes international understanding and it opens a window for our Chinese audience to understand the world beyond our borders."
Mr. Launsky-Tieffenthal concurred, saying, "The UN is dedicated to sharing the world's stories with audiences across the globe. By partnering with CBN to co-produce a Chinese version of 21st Century, DPI can now bring some of the most compelling and important stories to hundreds of millions of Chinese viewers. We hope the viewers will find the stories informative and relevant to their lives and that the programme will also help inform them of what the UN is doing in China and in other parts of the world as well".
The co-production, which enables the United Nations to reach new audiences within existing resources, is one Andi Gitow, Acting Chief of the Partnerships Unit in the News and Media Division looks to serve as a model for similar future projects. "We're extremely pleased to partner with CBN and believe it's an exciting model for the UN moving forward", said Ms. Gitow. "21st Century was created to be easily adapted into other languages -- a programme in which broadcasters could use their own talent and tailor the show to meet their unique needs. We hope this newest collaboration will serve as the framework for future co-productions in other languages."
