The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) has yet again made another stride in the development of its infrastructure following the inauguration of the new Delegates Lounge.
The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated by the UNON Director-General, Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde on 6 February 2013, witnessed by Ambassador Solomon Maina, the Director of Multilateral Directorate in the Kenya Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Tadumi On'okoko, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps; Mr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of UN-Habitat
and Ms. Amina Mohamed, Deputy Executive Director of UNEP. Other guests included Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Heads of UN Agencies and UN Staff.
The Director-General applauded the hard work and innovative strategies embraced by UNON’s facilities management to transform the complex. “Material improvements to our infrastructure demonstrate the growing importance of Nairobi as a hub for the UN’s diverse operations in the region. And they reflect the vital role that UNON is playing as the only UN Headquarters in Africa, and Indeed in the Global South.”
The inauguration comes a few days before the UNEP Governing Council meeting under the new configuration after Rio+ 20.
