"Lend Your Leg" campaign for mine awareness

"Lend Your Leg" campaign for mine awareness

Posted: Monday, 19 March 2012, New York | Author: Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Department of Peacekeeping Operations

April 4 is the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It is a timely reminder that clearing land of explosive remnants of war saves lives and protects livelihoods.

Mine clearance prevents an indiscriminate weapon from causing harm and havoc long after conflicts have ended, while also creating jobs, transforming danger zones into productive land and setting societies on course for lasting security.

“Lend Your Leg” was a campaign successfully carried out in Colombia in 2011.

This year, the entire UN Mine Action Team, which includes: DPKO/UNMAS, ODA, UNDP, OCHA, OHCHR, UNHCR, UNICEF, UN-Women, UNOPS, FAO, WFP, WHO and the Secretary-General joined this initiative which will culminate on 4 April the International Day of Mine Awareness.

Click here to Lend YOUR Leg! Mine action is about human security. It is about achieving development. Above all, it is about restoring to human beings their rightful dignity. Mine action prevents deadly weapons from causing further indiscriminate harm and from wreaking havoc and insecurity. Mine action provides assistance for the care, rehabilitation and the socio-economic reintegration of mine victims. Mine action supports national capacities and promoting national ownership while also creating jobs, transforming danger zones into productive land and setting communities on course toward lasting stability.

Around the world, people are joining together in solidarity to take a stand, to step forward and to "Lend a Leg for a mine free world", all through the simple gesture of rolling up their pants leg or the sleeve on their arm.
