29 January 2010: Plans underway to commemorate UN staff who lost their lives in Haiti
[New York | Author: DM/ DPKO/DFS]
The past couple of weeks have been very difficult for the entire UN family as all of us have been affected – directly or indirectly – by the tragic events of 12 January.
As we continue to report on the magnitude of our loss, the Department of Management (DM) together with the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and Field Support (DFS) would like to inform all staff that arrangements are underway to hold a Memorial Ceremony for all our friends and colleagues.
A date has not yet been set, as we are still gathering information on the status of some colleagues and the individual arrangements being made directly by the families. We will keep you informed throughout the planning process.
In the meantime, we thank you for your patience as we prepare a memorial that will honour our colleagues in a dignified way, that will celebrate their lives and honour their ultimate sacrifice in striving for a better world, and that offers comfort to their bereaved friends and families.
