Brief Background on Malawi
Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the country held multiparty elections in May 1994, under a provisional constitution, which came into full effect the following year.
From 1994 to 2004, Malawi was ruled by President Dr. Bakili Muluzi for two five year terms.
The current President, His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika took over the reigns of power following the national elections held in May 2004.

Economy
The economy is predominately agricultural, with about 90% of the population living in rural areas. In 2008, the economy is expected to grow at the rate of 7.4 per cent owing to the anticipated good performance of the Agricultural sector and strong growth in the manufacturing, construction, and information and communication sectors.
