What is Global Model United Nations?
The United Nations Department of Public Information will be organizing the first annual Global Model United Nations conference in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 - 7 August 2009.
The conference will include General Assembly plenary sessions and four of the Assembly’s Main Committees. The theme will be “The Millennium Development Goals: Lifting the bottom billion out of poverty.”
Approximately 600 to 1050 university-level students (between 18 and 24 years of age at the time of the conference) will be invited from Member States where Model UN programmes are currently active. The students will be selected through a fair and competitive selection process.

Who sponsors Global MUN?
The planning and organization of the conference is being undertaken by the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI) with the support of the World Federation of UN Associations, the United Nations Foundation and the UN Fund for International Partnerships. Delegates or their Model UN programmes will be responsible for the cost of their travel and accommodation or delegates may seek sponsors. The United Nations will try to assist delegates, particularly from developing countries, who can provide evidence that they have tried to raise funds but have been unable to do so.

Who is allowed to participate?
The Global Model United Nations conference will accept students from Member States of the United Nations who have participated in Model UN conferences and have been selected by their peers, selected or elected by Model UN secretariats on the basis of special, transparent selection processes to select delegates. Individual applications from outside of a Model UN programme or conference will not be accepted.

All delegates will have to be selected or elected by a Model UN conference, programme or secretariat. Individual applications from outside of a Model UN programme or conference will not be accepted.

Is there a Registration Fee to participate at GMUN?
There will be no registration fee to participate in the Global Model UN conference.

If my university level MUN conference was not invited to participate, is it possible to get an invitation?
Yes, please fill out the Model UN programme submission form and email it to education-outreach@un.org

Can I participate as an individual if I am willing to cover my own expenses?
Individual applications will not be accepted. Kindly seek to join a Model UN programme or conference in order to be eligible to be selected.

Our university level MUN conference has received an invitation and we would love to send students to represent our conference, but neither the conference nor the students have the financial resources to travel to Geneva. Can Global MUN assist?
The United Nations will try and assist delegates and Model UN programmes, particularly in developing countries, to find sponsors for their delegates’ participation in the conference. However, delegates or their MUN programmes must provide evidence that they have tried to raise funds but have been unable to do so.

Will Global MUN assist with visa applications?
The Global Model United Nations will provide each delegate with an official invitation letter to the conference that could be presented to the relevant Consulate to obtain the required visa. In addition, the Department of Public Information will assist delegates to contact relevant local UN offices to support them in the process.

Will accommodation arrangements be available for delegates?
DPI will try and identify accommodation for delegates at a low cost but will not be covering the cost for accommodation.

Can chaperones/friends come with delegates to GMUN?
Given the large number of conference participants, the conference will not be able to accommodate chaperones/friends in the conference facilities. Be advised however, that the conference will be webcast for the public to view.

What is the dress code?
Conference Dress Code
All delegates at the Global Model UN Conference must adhere to the following dress code: as a general rule, delegates must be dressed in business attire or formal national dress of the country being represented.

Will the conference organizers provide transportation to and from the airport?
DPI is looking into providing transportation to and from the airport. Delegates will be informed of those arrangements as soon as they are available.

Can I apply to be volunteer staff at GMUN if I cover my own expenses?
DPI in collaboration with the United Nations Office in Geneva and it Conference Logistics Committee will provide the volunteers for the conference. Individual applications will not be considered.

I am 18 years old but not enrolled in a university. Can I still register for the Global Model UN conference?
To be accepted as a delegate, nominees for the conference must be enrolled in a university and be 18 years of age at the time of the conference.

What is the cost of accommodation?
The cost of accommodation varies but DPI will provide a list with affordable accommodation for delegates to choose from.

Do students have to pay for their own meals?
Yes, students will have to pay for their own meals but DPI will provide information on the cost of meals both in the Palais de Nations and a list of restaurants in the city of Geneva.

What are the Civil Protection Centres?
The UN has reserved 200 spaces for students, who will not be able to arrange for a hostel, bed and breakfast or hotel, to stay in the "Civil Protection Centres" at CHF 15.00 per student per night. Spaces at the "Civil Protection Centres" should be reserved no later than six (6) weeks prior to the conference. In the Centres it is absolutely forbidden to smoke, to use electrical/gas appliances. Doors need to be open at all times.
