PRESS RELEASE CONDEMNING ACTION IN
LEBANON

"The General Public is hereby informed that, the Government of The Gambia learnt with great shock and sadness the Israeli attack on the Southern Lebanese City of Qana, which killed 54 people including 37 children.

The Government of The Gambia hereby condemns this atrocious Israeli action as illegal, barbaric and inhuman, and we are calling on the International Community to condemn it in the strongest possible terms and to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that Israel stop this heinous crime against innocent civilians, particularly women and children.

The Israeli action in Qana clearly demonstrates that
Israel is not targeting military installations but civilian as well as the infrastructure of Independent Lebanon.

It is therefore imperative that, the International Community ensures the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Israeli troops from
Lebanon . The International Community should take the same position against Israel as it did against Syria to ensure its withdrawal from Lebanon . The International Community owes the Independent people of Lebanon an obligation to ensure an immediate and unconditional end to the Israeli atrocities in Lebanon .

The Government of The Gambia in conclusion is calling on the United Nations Security Council, the European Union and the Powers that be to put an immediate end to this murderous violence in which civilians, women and children are the main victims." The release which is dated July 30th was made available to the press today.

The Gambia, it is worth mentioning has strong historical ties to Lebanon given the fact that many Lebanese migrated to and settled in The Gambia where they have played a crucial role in Economic development as Merchants. Over time they became full citizens with all the rights. They are notable in society and coexisted peacefully with their Gambian breathen. With a Deputy Speaker of Lebanese origin in Honourable George Aziz, we rest our case!
