Umoja role mapping workshop at UNIFIL in Lebanon

The Umoja solution, with its core implementation of SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and streamlining of administrative processes throughout the Secretariat, is proceeding on schedule; by 2016, the UN Secretariat as a whole will have transitioned to Umoja as its central administrative tool, leaving behind multiple and fragmented IT legacy systems, and promising a simplified and real-time approach to the Organization’s management of finances, resources and assets. 

In preparation for the Pilot deployment of Umoja at UNIFIL and UNSCOL in Lebanon in July 2013, the Umoja Organizational Change Management team, accompanied by specialists from OHRM and OPPBA, are on-site at UNIFIL Headquarters in Naquora Lebanon this week to conduct a comprehensive Umoja role-mapping workshop, from 28 Jan – 1 Feb. 2013. 

The purpose of the exercise is to determine how the new ERP roles will be assigned to local staff and discuss change management strategies to assist in the transition to the Umoja solution, with a focus on change impact assessments, role mapping and communication strategies.

Mr. Girish Sinha, Director of Mission Support for UNIFIL, observed in his opening remarks: “Change management is at the core of Umoja. It represents the ability to transition our workforce to new ways of working and manage the change impact on their roles that will determine the success of the roll out.” 

The Change Management workshop is building on the momentum created during the in-depth deployment workshop which took place at UNIFIL and UNSCOL in December 2012, with critical ‘lessons learned’ in development to be shared across all missions who are now embarking on their own preparation activities. Key amongst these are the upfront resource commitments required, minimising customisation in favour of a global template, engaging in detailed planning for the cutover period and the importance of a clear top-down communication strategy regarding the upcoming changes.
