Haiti Earthquake: 12 January 2010
04 March 2010 / 01:57

Haiti with candleThe devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010, taking the lives of thousands of Haitians and over a hundred of our United Nations friends and colleagues, was the biggest single loss of life in the history of UN peacekeeping.

The 101 tributes here have been prepared based on information gathered from a number of sources, both within and outside the United Nations, in the weeks that followed the Haiti earthquake. Originally intended for an internal audience of UN staff, they were published on the UN Secretariat’s intranet, “iSeek,” which is managed by the UN Department of Public Information. As a courtesy to family members and friends of the victims, and at the request of several Member States, they are republished in their entirety on this public page.

Memorial web site and online condolence book

These tributes could not have been written without the support of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the UN Department of Field Support, the UN Department of Management, members of the diplomatic community, and the numerous other staff, friends and family members from around the world who submitted photographs and shared their thoughts and personal stories about those who lost their lives.

The purpose of these tributes is solely to honour our fellow United Nations staff members and peacekeeping personnel who perished in the earthquake. It should not be attributed any official status as to documenting the situation of the individuals mentioned or not mentioned.

As we celebrate the lives of our colleagues and friends, we share the grief of bereaved families and the people of Haiti. In tribute to their ultimate sacrifice while striving to promote a better world, we reaffirm our determination to continue their work in helping the Haitian people recover and rebuild and we recommit to the principles and purposes of the United Nations.
