Ugly Betty

The cast and crew of the ABC TV comedy series Ugly Betty filmed scenes at United Nations Headquarters for its season premiere episode.

Scenes were filmed on the nights of 19 and 20 August 2009, in and near the ECOSOC Chamber, for a storyline featuring the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign. The fight against malaria is a priority issue for the United Nations.

The show’s main character, Betty Suarez, played by actress America Ferrera, in an effort to bring more substance to MODE, the fictional fashion magazine where she works, creates a fashion spread to highlight the use of bed nets for preventing malaria. Staging a magazine shoot in ECOSOC, Betty showcases models wearing fashionable forms of mosquito netting as a way of drawing attention to Nothing But Nets.

Ugly Betty is a sitcom featuring Honduran-American, Golden Globe-winning actress America Ferrera. She plays a plain but good-natured young woman, who works at a high-fashion magazine in New York City. Sporting thick-framed eyeglasses and dental braces, ‘Ugly Betty’ tries her best to fit into the competitive, sometimes superficial world of fashion. The series is an adaptation of Betty la fea, a Colombian telenovela which aired from 1999-2001. Produced by Salma Hayek, the show boasts 8 million viewers in the U.S.A. alone, and is seen in more than 50 countries.

Joining Ms. Ferrera for the location shoot were Grammy and Emmy-nominated actress Vanessa Williams and Eric Mabius, along with 200 cast and crew.

The two-part episode aired on Friday, 9 October, from 8:00 – 10:00pm on ABC.
