Tuvalu Welcomes Landmark UN Declaration on Sea-Level Rise

Date:
Monday, 12 October 2026

Today, 12 October 2026, Tuvalu joined other UN member States in welcoming the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Political Declaration on Sea-Level Rise; a significant milestone in advancing the international community's response to one of the most pressing challenges of our time. The Declaration follows its endorsement by Heads of State and Government during the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the General Assembly on 24 September 2026 and represents the first United Nations political declaration dedicated specifically to sea-level rise.

During the plenary meeting, Tuvalu Permanent Representative, Dr. Tapugao Falefou, underscored that sea-level rise poses an existential threat to low-lying atoll nations, with far-reaching implications for livelihoods, infrastructure, freshwater resources, cultural heritage, sovereignty, and statehood. He further emphasized the importance of ensuring continuity of statehood and maritime zones, strengthening international cooperation, and improving access to adaptation finance for vulnerable countries.

As a nation on the frontline of climate change, Dr Falefou said that Tuvalu welcomes the broad support demonstrated by Member States and views the Declaration as an important contribution to ongoing international efforts to address the legal, political, and practical implications of sea-level rise. He said that Tuvalu looks forward to continued engagement with partners and the wider United Nations membership to advance the Declaration's objectives and translate its commitments into meaningful action.

Fakafetai lasi to all Member States, regional groups, and partners whose constructive engagement contributed to this important outcomes.
