At the Pacific Digital Economy Roundtable hosted by the East‑West Center and PIDP held in the margin of the UNGA81 in New York this morning 21 September, Tuvalu Prime Minister Hon. Feleti P. Teo delivered an impactful message where he underscored that challenge in digital economy is no longer about identifying priorities — it is delivering them. Translating them into projects, investments, and outcomes that improve the lives of our people.
He said that digital connectivity is now essential national infrastructure for Tuvalu. It underpins education, healthcare, financial inclusion, economic opportunity, and resilience.
He further highlighted that Tuvalu Digital Nation Initiative and Future Now Project are central to ensuring continuity, cultural preservation, and access to opportunity for all Tuvaluans — wherever they reside.
The Vaka Cable Project represents one of the most transformative investments in Tuvalu’s history, unlocking faster, more affordable, and more reliable communications. However, submarine cables, paired with resilient satellite systems, will strengthen emergency response, support government continuity, and expand digital commerce, telemedicine, and remote learning.
Ultimately, the PM concluded that digital connectivity for Tuvalu is about opportunity, resilience, inclusion, and sovereignty. It ensures that even the smallest nations can participate fully in the digital economy of the future — and that the Pacific is seen not as the last frontier of connectivity, but as a region ready to lead with innovation and partnership.
