President Bashar Assad

President Bashar Assad was born in Damascus , Syria on September 11, 1965. After graduating from high school in 1982, President Assad entered the Medical School of Damascus University from which he graduated with honors and became a Medical Doctor in 1988. In 1992, he pursued further studies in the field of Ophthalmology in England . However, President Assad had to abruptly cut his training and return to Syria in 1994 upon the tragic death of his older brother, Bassel. In 1994, President Bashar Assad entered the Military Academy in Homs , Syria . By January 1999 he had risen through the ranks of the Syrian military to become a Colonel . In 1995, President Assad chaired the Syrian Computer Society and undertook extensive projects to introduce and spread the use of computer technology and the internet in Syria .

On June 24, 2000, he was elected Regional Secretary of the Baath Arab Socialist Party. In June 2000, the People's Council (Syrian Parliament) nominated him for the presidential referendum. After a nationwide referendum held on July 10, 2000, Bashar Assad was elected President of the Syrian Arab Republic . According to Syria 's Constitution, the president's term of office is seven years. President Bashar Assad was sworn in before the People's Council and gave his inaugural speech http://www.damascus-online.com/history/documents/bashar.htm on July 17, 2000. In December 2000, President Assad married Asma Akhras and they are the proud parents of three children: Hafez, Zein, and Kareem.
