Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World: The need for a New Agenda. Communiqué issued at Ministerial meeting in New York, 22 September 1998

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Slovenia, South Africa and Sweden met in New York on 22 September, 1998, to recall their Joint Declaration entitled "Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World: The Need for a New Agenda", and to assess the developments in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation following the issue of the Declaration on 9 June, 1998 (A/53/138).

The Ministers reaffirmed the intention to introduce at the current session of the United Nations General Assembly a draft resolution entitled "Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World: The Need for a New Agenda". They expressed the firm hope that this resolution, which reflects the repeated calls of the international community for urgent action on the important issue of nuclear disarmament, will receive overwhelming support from the Member States of the United Nations, and invited all other States to join them in the efforts to achieve a world free from nuclear weapons.
