Slovenia in the Security Council

CouncilThe Security Council has primary responsibility, under the United Nations Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security. While other organs of the United Nations make recommendations to Governments, the Council alone has the power to take decisions which Member States are obligated under the Charter to carry out. Slovenia was elected to a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the period 1998-1999 on 14 October 1997. In a contested election by secret ballot, Slovenia received 140 votes (82%) of Member States present and voting in the General Assembly. The election represented an important recognition of Slovenia and its constructive role in the United Nations. During the period of Slovenia's membership in the Security Council, the Delegation of Slovenia to the Council, under the leadership of Ambassador Dr. Danilo Türk, contributed actively towards the maintenance of international peace and security.
