Members of the Security Council heard a briefing by the Assistant Secretary-General Mr. Ibrahima Fall on the status of progress towards a negotiated settlement of the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Council members commended the OAU, including the Chairman of the OAU and President of Algeria H.E. Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the Secretary-General of the OAU Mr. Salim Ahmed Salim, the Personal Envoy of the President of Algeria and former Prime Minister Mr. Ahmed Ouyahia, and concerned Member States, for their energetic and persistent efforts to secure an agreement. Council members expressed their concern at the deteriorating humanitarian situation on the ground and called on the international community to respond generously to the consolidated inter-agency appeals for both countries. Council members also urged both Ethiopia and Eritrea to exercise maximum restraint. |
