Hoisting of the Flag
On 25 June 1991 the Republic of Slovenia became an independent state with the adoption of the Basic Constitutional Charter. On the following day, 26 June 1991, a special flag-hoisting ceremony was held in the capital city of Ljubljana. After the President of the Presidency of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Milan
Kučan, delivered a speech, the old flag of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia was lowered and the new flag of the independent Republic of Slovenia was hoisted in the middle of the Republic Square. The picture captures the moment when the officers of the honor guard of the Slovenian Territorial Defence Forces are about to raise the new flag, while the old tricolor with the red star is being lowered behind the figure of President
Kučan, who is standing on a podium. The structure in the background is the building of the Slovenian Parliament.
