Statement by Ambassador Francisco Seixas da Costa, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations, regarding the announcement of the re-candidature of the Secretary-General of the United Nations
Portugal is most pleased to see that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, has today announced his availability to candidate himself for a new mandate.
The current Secretary-General has shown, throughout these years, an outstanding capacity to place the UN at the center of major international issues. Through his efforts, he has developed the UN into a body with considerable prestige, which in turn has contributed to the increased role of the Organization in favor of peace and development. Beyond that, Mr. Kofi Annan has carried out a laudable effort in a revitalization of the UN, which could be solidly guaranteed to progress through the continuation of his mandate.
As Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations, I cannot go forward without highlighting, equally, the commitment that the current Secretary-General has always shown towards the question of East Timor, which is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the success stories of the Organization.
