PHILIPPINE PRESIDENCY. Ambassador Lauro L. Baja Jr., Permanent Representative
to the United Nations, meets with United Nations Secretary General Kofi
Annan on Wednesday, 31 August, at his 38th Floor office at the UN Headquarters
in New York, to discuss the program of work during the Philippine presidency
of the Security Council, which starts tomorrow, 1 September. With Ambassador
Baja are Ambassador Bayani S. Mercado, Deputy Permanent Representative
(in photo on right), Minister Anacleto Rei Lacanilao III, Political Coordinator,
Minister Leslie B. Gatan, Alternate Representative and Third Secretary
Elmer Cato, Alternate Representative.


TURNOVER. Ambassador Lauro L. Baja Jr., Permanent Representative of the
Philippines to the United Nations, thanks Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, Permanent
Representative of Japan, shortly after their bilateral meeting at the
Security Council on Thursday, 1 September. Ambassador Oshima was the first
among the 14 envoys from the member states that make up the Security Council
whom Ambassador Baja met during the first day of its presidency. The Philippines
will be president of the most powerful organ of the United Nations for

UN PRESS CONFERENCE. Ambassador Lauro L. Baja Jr., Philippine Permanent
Representative to the United Nations and this month's president of the
Security Council, announces the holding of a summit of leaders of the
15-member countries of the Council during a news conference on Friday,
2 September. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be presiding over
the summit which will be held on 14 September at the UN Headquarters in
New York. Also in photo are Ambassador Bayani S. Mercado, Deputy Permanent
Representative, and Minister Anacleto Rei Lacanilao, Political Coordinator.
