PRESS RELEASE NYPM 29-2011 10 JUNE 2011
PHL CALLS FOR NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT’S GREATER ROLE IN GLOBAL DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNNANCE 27 May 2011 Bali, Indonesia - The Philippines called on the 120-strong Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to take a greater role in promoting democracy and good governance in the world. Speaking at the General Debate of the recently-concluded 16th Ministerial Conference and Commemorative Meeting of the NAM, Honorable Jose S. Brillantes, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines and Head of Delegation, emphasized to NAM that “While we must cherish our past and rededicate ourselves to our principles, we must also broaden the horizons of our movement.” Undersecretary Brillantes stressed the need for a paradigm shift for NAM that replaced “the old dogma of national liberation with a commitment to democracy and good governance.” Underscoring the need for greater cooperation between and among members of the NAM, Undersecretary Brillantes also identified concerns of key importance to the Movement such as the scourge of nuclear weapons, the United Nations’ central role in global peace and security, and the rights of migrant workers.(Photo: Cecille Joyce Lao) END
