First Thematic Resolution on Police Adopted by Security Council

Under the Chairmanship of Australia, the Security Council adopted the first standalone resolution on police today, Thursday 20 November 2014, a major normative milestone. United Nations Police (UNPOL) activities in peace operations have grown in an unprecedented manner and evolved considerably since 1960, when the first police officers arrived in the United Nations Operation in the Congo.

For the fifth consecutive year, the UNHQ in New York hosted “Africa Week 2014” with the theme “The Africa We Want: UN Support to the African Union’s Agenda 2063”. In 2009, the United Nations launched a global effort to increase the representation of female police to comprise 20 percent of United Nations police in peace operations by 2014. To reach this target goal, the Police Division of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations developed the All-Female Selection Assistance and Assessment Team (SAAT) Training Project.
