UNMAS: Central Mogadishu free from all known unexploded ordnance

On 9 April 2014, the Federal Government of Somalia declared Central Mogadishu free from all known unexploded ordnance, in a ceremony organised by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). Beginning 2010, UNMAS systematically cleared Mogadishu of almost 1,000 items of unexploded ordnance, which, over the course of twenty years of civil war had littered the city.

Secretary-General establishes a High-level Panel of Experts on Recosting in response to the General Assembly resolution 68/246

In its resolution 68/246, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to commission an independent study on recosting of the biennial programme budget and options for dealing with fluctuations in exchange rates and inflation. A report on the findings and recommendations of the study is due to the General Assembly in its 69th session, autumn 2014.

Creating a referral pipeline to boost the number of senior women in field missions

The Department of Field Support (DFS) has requested Member States to identify women with proven leadership skills, integrity, commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter, and willingness to serve as Directors in UN Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions present in a conflict or in post-conflict locations that are typically at non-family duty stations.
