The Republic
of Moldova is a sovereign state situated in Southeastern Europe
between Romania and Ukraine.
The Republic of Moldova is a country, situated in the Southeast part of Europe, neighboring Romania to the West and Ukraine to the East. The Republic of Moldova proclaimed its sovereignty in June 1990, and on August 27, 1991 . its State Independence. The Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992.
The President of the Republic of Moldova, H. E. Mr. Vladimir VORONIN, was born on May 25, 1941 in Corjova, a village near Chisinau.
Mr. Vladimir Voronin graduated from the following institutions Technical College in Chisinau (1961), Union Institute for Food Industry (1971), Academy of Sciences of the CC CPSU (1983) and Police Academy of the Soviet Union (1991). He received diplomas in engineering, economy and law.
Mr. Vladimir Voronin started his professional activity in 1961 in the Criuleni village as a director of breadfactory. In the period of 1966 and 1971 he worked as a director of a breadfactory in Dubasari. During the next ten years he worked in the local branch of CPSU in Dubasari and Ungheni. Since 1983 Mr. V. Voronin was appointed as inspector, deputy chief of the organizational department of CC CPSU. In 1985 he was designated as a chief of the department of Council of Ministers of Moldova, and between 1985 and 1989 - the First Secretary of the local branch of CPSU in Bender. In the period of 1989 and 1990 he served as the Minister of Internal Affairs of Moldova. In 1993 he was elected as a co-president of the organizational committee of the Party of Moldovan Communists of the Republic of Moldova and First Secretary of the CC of PCRM.
Mr. Vladimir Voronin has a military title of Major-General.
Between 1980 and 1990 he served as a deputy in the Supreme Council of Moldova. In March 1998 he was elected as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, member of the permanent Bureau and head of the parliamentary group of the Communist party. In February 2001 he was elected again, as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. In March 2001 he was elected by Parliament as the President of the Republic of Moldova.
Mr. Vladimir Voronin is married and has two children.

Economy. The Republic of Moldova faces a period of transition to a market economy. The reforms promoted for the last years have determined the achievement of some positive results, such as: the creation of a multi-sector economy, the private sector having an impact of over 60% to GDP; prices liberalization; creation of structures for a viable market (commercial banks, Free Economic Zones, etc.)
The undertaken economic reforms in Moldova enjoy the support of International economic-financial organizations. Since 1992, when Moldova adhered to IMF, WB and EBRD, it has benefited from a range of investments from International financial bodies and some countries, such as Romania, Russia, USA, Germany, Japan, and others.
The Capital of the Republic of Moldova, Chisinau is a significant administrative, political, economic, scientific, cultural and tourist center of the Republic of Moldova. The first historic record of the name Chisinau goes back to July 17 1436. The population of Chisinau is about 757 thousand people.
Population. The Republic of Moldova has a population of 4.2643 million and is one of the most densely populated European countries. Population density is 126.2 persons per square kilometer.
Moldova is populated by different ethnic groups. A breakdown of major ethnic groups is as follows: Moldovans . 64,5%, Ukrainians - 13,8 %, Russians . 13 %, others (Gagauzians, Bulgarians, Jews, Byelorussians, Germans, etc.).
Languages. According to the constitution of the Republic of Moldova, the state language in Moldova is Moldavian, functioning on the Latin alphabet basis. As a state language, it is used in all political, economic, social and cultural domains, and is the inter-ethnic language of communication in Moldova. The state language acts as the working language in the activity of all state bodies, state administration and public authorities. Russian along with Moldavian is used as a communication language among different nationalities.
Currency. The national currency, the Moldovan Leu, was introduced on the 29th of November 1993. The National Bank of Moldova was established in 1991. The exchange rate in June 2002 is 13,8 leu for 1 $US.
