Welcome to the website of the Permanent Mission of Mauritius to the United Nations. Mauritius achieved independence on 12 March 1968 and became a Republic within the British Commonwealth on 12 March 1992. In addition to its membership to the Commonwealth, Mauritius is a member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the Southern African Development Community and La Francophonie, Mauritius is also a founding member of the Indian Ocean Rim - Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) and a member of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP). This Website is meant to provide a brief overview of the involvement and contribution of Mauritius in the United Nations. Mauritius served as an elected member of the UN Security Council during the period 2001 to 2002, and it held the chairmanship of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). It is also serving as a member of ECOSOC for the period 2004-2006. |
