ELEMENTS FOR A STATEMENT TO THE PRESS
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL
BURUNDI
- Members of the Security Council heard a briefing by the Secretariat on the situation in Burundi, the outcome of the Arusha Summit and on its follow-up;
- Members of the Council expressed their strong support for the facilitation efforts of President Mandela and, in this regard, they urged the parties to engage seriously in the peace process;
- Members of the Council called on all parties to end hostilities without delay,
- Members of the Council expressed concern at the current humanitarian situation and stress the importance of ensuring access to the population in need as well as ensuring the safety and security of the humanitarian workers;
- Members of the Council also stressed the importance of complete dismantling of the regroupment camps.
- Members of the Council further stressed the importance of the resumption development aid, in this context, they support the holding of a conference of donor countries which would facilitate the relaunching of the Burundian economy.
