Population

As of July 2004, the Iraqi population stands at 25,374,691. About 75 percent of the population of Iraq is Arab. Kurds, dwelling in the highlands of northern Iraq constitute around 20% of the population. Smaller groups include Turkmens, Assyrians, Yazidis. In the rural areas of the country many of the people still live in tribal communities, leading a nomadic or semi nomadic existence and keeping herds of camels, horses, and sheep.

Principal Cities

Baghdad is the capital and largest city of Iraq. Other major cities include Al Basrah, the main seaport, and Mosul.
