UN High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development - 14-15 September 2006 The General Assembly adopted, without a vote, Resolution A/RES/60/227 submitted by the Second Committee regarding International Migration and Development determining that the High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development will take place on September 14-15, 2006 at UN Headquarters, at the opening of its 61st Session. The High-Level Dialogue was an opportunity for Member States to discuss at the "ministerial level or highest level possible", the "multidimensional aspects of international migration and development in order to identify appropriate ways and means to maximize its development benefits and minimize its negative impacts." The High-Level Dialogue consisted of four plenary meetings and four interactive roundtables. The roundtables were held concurrently in two sets of two, one in the afternoon of September 14th and one in the morning of September 15th. These focus of these four roundtables were: 1. The effects of international migration on economic and social development; 2. Measures to ensure respect for and protection of the human rights of all migrants, and to prevent and combat smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons; 3. The multidimensional aspects of international migration and development, including remittances; 4. Promoting the building of partnerships and capacity-building and the sharing of best practices at all levels, including the bilateral and regional levels, for the benefit of countries and migrants alike. The resolution also invited IOM to have a significant role in the High-Level Dialogue by contributing to the preparation of, and by participating in, the event. |
