Presidency of the Security Council in December: Chad

Open debate on 16 December 2014, at 10:00, in the Security Council Chamber, on “Peace operations: the UN-AU partnership and its evolution” in connection with the agenda item “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in maintaining international peace and security”.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Informal consultations of the plenary on the outcome of the Summit on the post-2015
development agenda will be held on 16 December 2014, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

The Fifth Committee will hold its 22nd meeting on 16 December 2014, at 15:00, in Conference Room 3

UN70 – a ‘ReBirth’ in Geneva

Plans for a monumental sculpture called “The ReBirth” to celebrate the United Nations’ 70th anniversary have been unveiled in Geneva. Designed by world-renowned Italian artist Maestro Michelangelo Pistoletto, the sculpture will be located in Ariana Park and inaugurated on UN Day next year - 24 October 2015 – during an Open Day at the Palais des Nations.

DPKO continues successful Rule of Law training programme

DPKO has successfully concluded on 1 November a Rule of Law training programme for Judicial Affairs officers in peacekeeping operations in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The 6-day training focused on strategies to assist national actors to strengthen rule of law in the immediate aftermath of conflict through early peacebuilding initiatives.

Under the Chairmanship of Australia, the Security Council adopted the first standalone resolution on police today, Thursday 20 November 2014, a major normative milestone. United Nations Police (UNPOL) activities in peace operations have grown in an unprecedented manner and evolved considerably since 1960, when the first police officers arrived in the United Nations Operation in the Congo.
