The Bahamas and The International Community

The Bahamas is a small middle-income developing state, with a population of approximately 310,000 people.  The Bahamas is an archipelago of approximately 700 islands, cays, and islets, of which 28 are inhabited, covering 100,000 square miles in the Atlantic Ocean. The main economic activities of The Bahamas’ economy are tourism and financial services, which together account for the overwhelming majority of the country’s revenue and employment figures.

As a developing country, The Bahamas’ priorities at the United Nations and at other international and regional organizations are social and economic development, and preserving and promoting the security, development and viability of small island developing states.

The Bahamas has been a member of the United Nations since 18 September, 1973, having been admitted to the UN two months after gaining Independence from the United Kingdom on 10 July, 1973.  At the UN, The Bahamas is a member of a series of interlocking and complementary political groupings, through which it pursues its objectives, including the Caribbean Community [CARICOM], the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States [GRULAC], the Alliance of Small Island States [AOSIS], the Forum of Small States [FOSS], the Group of 77 and China, and the Non-Aligned Movement [NAM].
