The Permanent Mission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Nations is pleased to announce that on Thursday, 20 January 2005, in New York City, H.E. Ms. Paulette A. Bethel, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the United Nations, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing formal diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Latvia.

The Joint Communiqué, which was also signed on behalf of Latvia by H.E. Mr. Gints Jegermanis,  Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations, states that the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Government of Latvia have established diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level as of 20 January 2005, in order to promote mutual understanding and to strengthen the friendship and cooperation among their two peoples.

Latvia, a country of just under 2.5 million people, is located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania.  Latvia acceded to membership of the European Union on 1 May 2004.  The Bahamas Government looks forward to closer collaboration with the Government of Latvia, not only on a bilateral basis, but also in the United Nations and other multilateral arena.
