The
Permanent Mission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Nations is
pleased to announce that on Thursday, 20 January 2005, in New York City, H.E.
Ms. Paulette A. Bethel, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to
the United Nations, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing formal diplomatic
relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Latvia. The
Joint Communiqué, which was also signed on behalf of Latvia by H.E. Mr. Gints
Jegermanis, Ambassador/Permanent
Representative of Latvia to the United Nations, states that the Government of
the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Government of Latvia have established
diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level as of 20 January 2005, in order to
promote mutual understanding and to strengthen the friendship and cooperation
among their two peoples.
Latvia,
a country of just under 2.5 million people, is located in Eastern Europe,
bordering the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania. Latvia acceded to membership of the
European Union on 1 May 2004. The
Bahamas Government looks forward to closer collaboration with the Government of
Latvia, not only on a bilateral basis, but also in the United Nations and other
multilateral arena. |
